Power Transformers Services Market Analysis
INTRODUCTION
Power transformers are a major spend item for utilities. They are the most crucial equipment in the substations and a key portion of the total spending of transmission system operators. PTR sizes the opportunity for this critical equipment by looking at individual utilities in target regions to analyze the upcoming greenfield and brownfield substation projects. All of this is housed under the umbrella of PTR’s Power Transformers Service. The utility specific approach employed by PTR in this service allows us to understand the grid dynamics and analyze the market in more granular detail than most of our competitors so that we can convey a much deeper understanding of the market to our clients.
Taking a snapshot of what’s going on around the world, we see that two key players in the GCC market are dominating market shares with a combined 38% hold due to their low-cost quality solutions. In this market, approximately 90% of power transformers are sold through EPCs while the rest are sold directly to customers. Over in Dubai, DEWA inaugurated 20 new substations in 2020, which include a 400 kV substation with a capacity of 2,020 MVA and nineteen 132 kV substations in several areas across the city with a capacity of 2,700 MVA. This substantial investment in grid infrastructure is primarily because, under the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, DEWA plans to install 42 GW of clean and renewable energy.
The number of local transformer manufacturers in China has grown sharply since 2017 resulting in a fierce competition in the Asia Pacific market. In 2020, JSHP, one of the leading suppliers of renewable GSU transformers supplied more than 550 units of power transformers worldwide despite Covid-19. APAC market players are continuing to penetrate other global markets as well. In the past, the GCC market was mainly dominated by western entities, as buyers in GCC were hesitant to adopt products from Asian suppliers. However, in recent times, buyers are more open to procuring from Asian suppliers, especially Korean supplies due to their improved quality reputation.
In Europe, due to the ease of access for manufacturers across these markets, western European manufacturers like Hitachi ABB Power Grids and Schneider Siemens hold a large share of the market in almost all EU countries along with country specific players manufacturing locally.
Further West in North America, brownfield investment is dominant in the power transformers market as utilities have been planning for various capital projects to refurbish decades old grid infrastructure. Here, HICO America is the leading supplier of Generator Step Up power transformers especially to wind power plants. Of the total power transformer installations worldwide, HICO has more than 30% of the power transformers installed in this region.
